ode to my mug …

~11 may  2014~

All good things come to an end and this morning, my beloved ceramic tea mug*  bit the dust. I’d washed the cup in the dishwasher and emptying said, picked up the mug, out of the top rack, by its silicone sleeve whereby the mug slid out, landing on the granite counter – of course! Result: the rim of the cup chipped on two sides – opposite, mais oui! – thereby rendering the cup useless.

A quick web search this morning yielded many replacements but none quite measure up. A while back, I bought a similar mug from IKEA and it seems to come closest to the real thing! With Christmas coming – just 30 days away – I will soon be using my fave Scotty Dog mug – best for hot tea and hot chocolate – until I find a suitable replacement or Santa brings a new mug.

In every cloud, there is indeed a silver lining; a post for today plus a zillion – I exaggerate a wee bit – mug shots (pun intended) above, taken over the years, through all seasons, morning, noon, and night. Seldom has my mug been beyond arm’s reach. I suspect the mug is still serviceable as a pen/pencil holder. I’ll consider.

Cheers~

  1. I just broke a favorite mug of my husband’s and I thought, gee now I have an idea of what to give him for Christmas. I am sorry you broke your favorite mug and I hope the new favorite mug to be is found soon!!

  2. The just-right mug is such a small comfort in our days. I’m so sorry yours is now . . . retired. May you soon find the just-right replacement. XO

  3. I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of your favorite mug. I recently dropped my favorite mug, chipped the edge and carefully glued the chips back in. It’s a little bit sloppy, but I just wasn’t ready to mourn my mug. Here’s hoping Santa brings you a new favorite!

  4. Well that’s a darn-it!! I’m glad you have a happy outlook about replacing it, but still … I’m going to miss seeing it around 🙂

  5. Oh, it’s sad when something we love is no longer part of our lives … I like the thought that your much-loved mug can be reincarnated for another purpose, and continue to give you a different kind of pleasure. And that somewhere in the world, there is another mug gently wending its way to you …

  6. Well darn it. I have a few favorite mugs and they are such a part of my morning routine. Here is hoping a new favorite finds a way into your morning solitude and quiet routine. I love that you had so many photos of that mug. Food for thought.

  7. I hate when things like that happen. I’m looking forward to bringing out the Christmas/wintery mugs for hot chocolate and warm toddies

  8. Oh no! I’m so sorry about your mug. I have a coffee mug that my family knows better than to touch. They know it’s Mine! and they’ll be in the cold, wet dog house if they dare use it. I used to have a set of six and I’m down to the final one. It’s going to be a sad, sad day when something happens to it.
