I’ve spent most of the past couple days sorting through papers for notes and ideas I want to retain…I have the bad, bad habit of writing things down on any and all available pieces of paper …and while doing so captures the moment, retrieving and using my “brilliant idea or thought” is more often than not, just a notion.
I tell myself that I should capture these “brainstorms” digitally in/on one of my iToys, er uh, tools – my watch, phone and or iPad. Yes, perhaps, but the pencil and paper are so handy and besides, I’ve been using them far longer than the digital tools have been in existence. But, as James Clear, author of Atomic Habits shared in his weekly Aug 17, 2023 newsletter, 3-2-1 Thursday:
“Some things work and some things don’t. There’s is almost always another way to get where you want to go. Don’t keep trying to open a locked door.”
Perhaps that is the key. Perhaps I will set up some sort of digital repository for my brilliant ideas.
Perhaps…
I have the same bad habit, and it’s hard to break! I don’t know how much TV you’re watching these days, but there’s a great commercial for an insurance company where there’s a mother and daughter talking and the mother says she needs to make a note of something so she’ll remember it — so she writes it down on a sticky note that she then puts on her phone! It hits just a little too close to home!

Yep! Know that commercial – Liberty Mutual – very well…and very relatable, in oh so many ways…

I used to use post it’s for everything, but you pointed me at Two’s and Notion and I do use them both along with Tasks in Outlook. Maybe the disconnect is not in writing the notes but what to ‘do’ with them afterwards? I had a little post it note journal with sections to stick them in. 😉 Can’t wait to see how you progress!

I am another paper and pencil woman. I keep a few small notebooks where I am apt to be sitting and try to jot things in them. Then the trick is to remember which notebook has which note. If you come up with a master plan that works please let us know.

I had to laugh out loud – totally can relate to the ?: “Hmmm, now let me see, where did I write that? ” There ARE ways and tools and as soon as I discover the very best one -haha- I’ll gladly let you know!

What a fun discussion! I’ve started collecting scraps of paper just so I have a place to capture those random thoughts … and occasionally I’ll even paste one of them into my journal. The key for me is that once I’ve written something on the scrap, I keep it on my desk?
