Tree quilt block #1 for Australia done! Background not included. I will begin the second, using different fabrics and design.

Wishing loads of love, congrats and many more years of happiness to this young lady, my grand niece Kayla, who celebrates her 19th birthday today. This photo was taken 7 years ago and despite the words on the shirt, she – the total antithesis of difficult! – is now in her first year of college.

Winding up Fever this week, going this afternoon to see “Just Mercy” and joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday.

my one little word | 1/2020 …

My 2020 word, habit, continues from 2019. I decided to stick with it for several reasons, most pointedly ’cause I gave the word short shrift most of the year. Closer to year’s end did I begin to think and deliberately, seriously live with the word and all its facets and connotations.

Sitting on my stand-up/sit-down computer desk, is a plaque that reminds/invites me to Make Today Amazing. I’m of the opinion that I not only can do that but am also the only one who can! Most times, my daily plus +/ delta* Δ ) action list has more right forward >>> arrows, I’ll do them tomorrow, or perhaps never? … shhh… next to items that I didn’t get around to let alone complete. *Greek symbol for change

This month, I’ve:

1- been gathering into one central place, my habit tools and resources:

journal, planners & notebooks
books on the subject
signage & words
quotes, sayings, etc., and

2- looking at my life ( activity, actions, schedule, and druthers and especially those habits that I think (know!) do not serve my better intentions) and making small changes/improvements.

My plan for this year of focusing on and living with my word habit is to achieve much better outcomes.

…follow Friendstitchin’ Sundays.

We had a lovely meal: great soups, salads, bread, cheddar sun chips, and coconut cake. Our gatherings, now entering year 6? 7? , are something we all look forward to and jealously guard on our calendars.

This morning I felt a bit under the weather so I played hookey from my Monday quilt group meeting… Feeling better and back to the sewing machine; am making progress with the first of my two quilt blocks for Australia and I have two blocks to stitch for the group’s 2021 annual raffle quilt.

Tomorrow is the first One Little Word for 2020 share on this blog. I’m looking forward to our year together.

thing 1: Thursday morning we were greeted with a lovely sunrise. One can never see too many sunrises…

thing 2: Wed’s PM online grocery shopping experience with delivery worked well…groceries arrived within the selected two-hour window and all but two items: 1 -bread (I forgot) and 2- a can of tuna, they forgot; we ordered two. A quick call took care of their mistake and the total was adjusted. I imagine we’ll try this again. Certainly beats the drive there, etc. I stopped at the grocery store on my way home for the bread, to take care of my mistook!

thing 3: I missed 3 on Thursday yesterday. Thursdays, I generally meet with my stitching group. Yesterday, we had a delicious lunch: cauliflower cheese soup, green salad, fresh baked bread and chocolate frosted cookies, Yum! I was so busy eating that I forgot to take a picture of our repast. Friend Fran (our hostess) had just returned last week from a trip to London and brought each of us a souvenir: a themed bookmark and deck of playing cards.

tgif+: today’s been quiet, filled with light chores, primarily laundry, and waiting for niece Kayla to arrive; she’s planning a painting party to celebrate her 19th birthday and I get to supply the paint! I’m delighted that she’s doing this and that I can help…I trust the paint’s still solvent. If not, guess I’ll be buying some for her birthday present.

unraveled wednesday | 1.22.20

My plan for today included beginning a tree block to send to Australia and that entailed finding fabrics – my favorite part of quilting: mixing and matching fabrics with the end in mind. I chose from my stash fabrics to make two blocks…and I cut the pieces for one. I looked up and realized the afternoon was rapidly disappearing, the temp had risen to 40° – we started out mid 20s – and I had time before sunset to go for a walk… So, out I went.

On my walk today, I listened to this week’s Gretchen Rubin Happier podcast and

captured this lovely picture of the sky just before sunset. Arriving home, I planned to stitch and wound up ordering groceries from Whole Foods, instead. We have been talking about trying the service someday and today turned out to be it.

I’m probably half way through Fever and plan to go see Just Mercy next Wednesday with a friend. Joining Kat and friends for another Unraveled Wednesday.

… are below freezing cold. As I was fixing breakfast, I felt my slippers sticking to the floor; looking down, I saw why: there was a puddle of water right in front of the sink . That cold! For when the temp drops to 20s, the pipe under the kitchen sink drips water and eventually, the water overflows to the floor. Breakfast-fixin’ postponed while I mopped up water. Appealed to Alexa ~ to no avail … Note to Self: call in plumber; I’m sure there’s a wrap that can be affixed to take care of that little annoyance.

Yesterday, one member of our Thurs Stitchin’ group texted she was knitting Joey (kangeroo) pouches. ??? I replied…and she answered: Australian wildfires have left a lot of orphans…including kangaroos…so there is a worldwide call for knitted kangaroo pouch simulators. Another member shared there is also a world wide call for tree quilt blocks for (human) families who are homeless as a result of the fires.

There are still hours left in this national holiday of service and tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. I am now off to my sewing studio to look for fabrics to make a tree quilt block or two.

P.S. The temperature is currently 33°F and the sun shines; perhaps I’ll fire up Inspector Gamache and we’ll go for a quick spin around the block before the sun sets.

Yesterday – Tuesday – was our bi-monthly Recent Reads gathering. My friend Margaret who is a fan of contemporary poets/poetry introduced us to the newest Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo, shown above. Joy, a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, is the Nation’s first Native American Poet Laureate. She is also a saxophonist ( and for that alone, she wins points from Norman, who plays/ed the sax). I’m looking forward to delving into her poetry and listening to her music.

I started Fever (reading the Kindle version) and finding the book fascinating – it reads less like fiction than I expected. I was particularly surprised that I adapted to the e-version so readily. I actually prefer print on paper… For my ears, I’ve downloaded Louise Penny’s 6th Inspector Gamache novel: Bury Your Dead for my next walking companion (not tomorrow, tho’; forecast is for high winds, sleet, snow? Time will tell).

The hat is finished! I have left over yarn; I think I’ll add it to the Log Cabin/9 Patch (LC9P) when I get to the smaller blocks. The LC9P and the Christmas stocking are next on the knitting list. Every stitch moves me closer to the finish line – 5 knitting projects to complete in 2020.

… are a return to quilting

… This dynamic quilt is anther area quilt group’s 2020 Raffle Quilt, brought to our quilt meeting for display and to sell tickets: – 6 chances for $5. Yep, I bought a few chances…

… Every two years, we have our three-days’ quilt show; this is the beginning of our 2021 Raffle Quilt. We, the members, stitch the blocks and then a committee assembles all into one quilt. I have two blocks to assemble and stitch ….

… My quilt group’s current president made this Baltimore Album Quilt for her parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. The little quilted book in the middle row, center block, includes their wedding day photo. Her parents are now deceased but she said the quilt was on their bed for years. She hand quilted the white background.

… Lunch at Nordstrom:

Today’s special: Winter Salad, a mix of organic baby greens, kale, all natural blackened chicken, roasted sweet potato, salted pecans, goat cheese and white balsamic honey plus a cup of Roma Tomato Basil soup and a Rustic cheddar chive biscuit. Yummy! The best part: doggie bag for later!

… Post Script:

Monday’s blog post: published Tuesday. I had drafted this post during lunch and planned to publish when I got home. On my way home, I stopped at an art shop and turned on my phone (no text messages while I’m driving) to find a flurry of 35 text messages from my sister and nieces: My sister was in the hospital – flu? Turns out no – a kidney stone. Passed. Thankfully. She’s home and maybe a little worse for the wear but doing well! Whew!

~Christmas decorations to be packed/put away~

thinking: just two and half weeks ago, it was Christmas and today – 21 days left in this month, the first of the new decade, 2020. Where does the time go?

grateful: for a good night’s sleep (my head hit the pillow and I was out as a light)…

inspired/intrigued: yesterday, Bonny shared instructions for an 8-page mini booklet. My mind’s been toying with the possibilities presented (read point #3 ) by this clever use of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper and some colored pencils…

finishing: I guess I’ll wrap up this post and move on to a) putting away Christmas decorations and b) completing my December Daily/Journal Your Christmas album. Looks like I may close Friday with a win!
